Anna Cyan was born in Ukraine, then part of the USSR. She began to study art at age 10, through the formal Soviet art education system and privately, with local artists.

After moving to Canada, Cyan graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design. She later studied realist painting/drawing at the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art, and independently with Alyssa Monks, NYC.

The latter studies reflect Cyan’s focus on using realism to depict her contemporaries. “Human beauty and frailty are everywhere I look, and they move me constantly and deeply. Portraying them is not about recreating a likeness. I want to show the movements of the human soul.”
